In today's market, the classic "buy and hold" mindset has been replaced by a "get in, get out, and cash out fast" mentality. Why? Instant Gratification Culture: People have become accustomed to instant results. Social media, day trading apps, and influencer hype have trained them to expect fast gains. They don’t want to wait five or ten years for a payoff when they can gamble on a meme stock and (hopefully) double their money in a day. Untrustworthy Markets: Manipulation, rug pulls, algorithmic trading, and blatant insider games have destroyed faith in the idea that fundamentals matter. The average retail trader doesn’t want to be the sucker left holding a stock that’s been pumped and dumped. Economic Uncertainty: Why would anyone lock their money away in a long-term investment when they see inflation, rising interest rates, layoffs, and government debt ballooning? People are struggling to afford basics, so they’re chasing quick wins, not slow gains. Risk Aversion with No Reward: Even “safe” investments like bonds have become suspect. The traditional 60/40 stock-bond portfolio is seen as a dead model because both stocks and bonds have been unpredictable. If safety is an illusion, might as well chase volatility. Fed Games and Rigged Rules: The Federal Reserve’s money printing and bailouts for the rich have created a two-tier market. Retail investors know they don’t have a seat at the table and that the big players will be saved first in any crisis. The old-school Warren Buffett strategy – "buy great companies and hold them for decades" – is seen as a fairy tale for boomers who had a very different economy. People today aren’t willing to sit on losses for years while praying for a comeback. They want moonshots, leverage, and quick exits. And they’re not wrong for feeling that way.
